‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s path from injury table to scoring with the Basque club

Thehe first time the Athletic striker featured in English soil, an teenage representing Athletic Bilbao B against Bundesliga youth at Adams Park in fall 2015, he hit the target. On his next visit he took the field in the country, against Sunderland weeks after, he scored. The third time, against Manchester City soon after, well, he scored again. As he revisited to the northwest to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in 2017, he did it once more. A spectacular strike, as well. “Truly,” he remarks, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” Therefore the team did what was necessary: he was replaced.

“I became very upset,” the attacker reveals, and then he starts laughing. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I performed well. I wasn’t allowed to feature the final 45 minutes: I hadn’t yet signed agreement, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I remember reading about the Red Devils, the typical thing. I have no idea how true it was, but had they contacted me, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I feel lucky to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the facility, Bilbao, the early training is set to begin; post-session, the quick travel to Loiu and another trip to the UK, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the UCL on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. This is proving a challenging campaign for the team, partially owing to the requirements of their participation. Defeated late on in the local rivalry, they have secured just a single victory of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and the German side in the continental stage. Yet, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and those that lie ahead, and he feels a calm gratitude from him.

In the three years since he had returned to the club, the striker has been a final four contender in Europe, stopped at the gates a domestic final by the English giants, and has ridden an historic vessel up the Nervión estuary accompanied by a million fans after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. He’s now the club’s leading marksman in the UCL, where they are distinctive and making their first appearance in ten years. “I never imagined this,” he says.

The player believed it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and he was right. The son of the one-time rival player Xabi Guruzeta and a dedicated fan at the team he now opposes, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that developed the coach, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at seventeen but after his top-level debut in that summer, he suffered a torn cruciate, the cut, a drop in category and a return before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to enjoy the highlights of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the UCL.

“Joining the setup thinking you won’t reach the senior squad but every phase you go through you’re still there and you can observe the approach. You get there but … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his bow and early 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances there and I tear my cruciate.

“A massive setback but In retrospect as something positive because it shifted the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is hard, but it helps. You develop habits you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then return home, as a youngster does. In the facility, you have everything, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Strength training. Should your hips be uneven, address that. With decent ankle function, make it a 12 or a 14. All the minor details: do them.

“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have crashed into players repeatedly. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Training finishes, but further effort is needed. Everyone else is ready, really ready; you have to be too.”

Game time is essential. He left upset in 2020, aged 23, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he scored three times in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the following period, the goals started to flow. “Many experience this: temporary moves, ended deals. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and when eventually a vacancy arises where you play, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. When they decided to call again, it was a dream come true. Lifting the cup, European football, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Particularly after the prior campaign which, sometimes, was about endurance. Previously the main threat with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
