Patrick Bamford Joins Sheffield United After Initiating Abusive Songs Targeting Coach Chris Wilder
Patrick Bamford has signed with Sheffield United just half a year after instigating insulting chants targeting the team's coach, Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, a free agent since leaving Leeds United, has signed a deal with the Championship strugglers until January. Bamford's lengthy time at Elland Road concluded by mutual consent this past summer.
One of Bamford’s last memorable actions as a Leeds player involved leading abusive songs about Wilder amid Leeds' success festivities this spring. Now, the one-cap England player will feature for Wilder as Sheffield United's boss looks to rescue his beloved club out of the relegation zone.
Past Conflict Involving the Striker & Wilder
Both men had a past before Leeds won promotion back to the top flight the previous campaign and United were defeated in the playoff final by Sunderland. The manager called Bamford as “a muppet” back when the roles were reversed in 2018-19 and Sheffield United secured direct promotion while Leeds United fell short in the promotion playoffs.
Reconciliation and Moving Forward
Everything seems has been put behind them with United, the Championship’s least productive attack, in desperate need of improvement in attack while Bamford looking to resurrect his career.
The Wilder chant went viral in April. An apologetic Bamford along with Leeds boss, Farke, phoned Wilder the next day.
Wilder commented at the time: “Spoke with Pat yesterday and I’ve no problem at all with that. I’m not sure about the words used from a fellow pro! But I valued and admired him calling me.
“We had 20 minutes and the same again I spoke to Daniel Farke too and we had a longer discussion together and he is a great person, a class act. Back in my playing days we used to give it and take it and that is part and parcel of football across all levels, including a Sunday morning. I have no problem at all. I'm fine with it and I told him that to Pat.”
Recent Playing Challenges
The forward featured in 18 appearances with Leeds United last season but the ex- Forest, Chelsea & Middlesbrough player has struggled with fitness issues over the past few seasons.
