The England manager Questions Home Fan Atmosphere Following Emphatic Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel shared his sadness that the Three Lions team did not get greater backing from the home crowd during their decisive triumph over Wales on Thursday night.
The manager was satisfied to see his side showcase their good form, with goals from Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the first 20 minutes deciding the match. But, he was displeased with the energy at the iconic venue.
“We had limited sessions to get ready against a drilled team and we did very well,” Tuchel commented. “It could have been 5-0 up at the break. We missed the fourth and fifth goals. It was quiet. We didn’t get support back from the crowd. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you deliver in the first quarter? We prevented them escape. When you only hear just Wales fans for 30 minutes, it’s sad because the team warranted better encouragement today.”
“I support my words. There’s nothing more than being 3-0 in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a bit more backing in periods where it is challenging.”
“After halftime, to get behind us, there was excessive backing for the opposition. It might have aided us to recharge, but that’s football and so be it.”
Selection Choices Justified by Performance
Apart from potentially starting a dispute among fans, the manager also caused a stir by excluding Bellingham and Foden from his team selection. But the decision was backed up by Rogers excelling in the No 10 position and netting his first international goal.
“He plays his game,” the head coach noted. “He is a No 10 and he is competing for his spot.”
Wales Manager Seeks Lessons from Loss
The Wales manager expressed hope that his team, who host Belgium in a key qualifying match on Monday, take lessons from their poor first-half display.
“This is why I wanted this friendly,” the manager said. “I need to see where we are. What are our ambitions? Who do we want to be? Today gives me motivation.”
Fitness Worry for Watkins
Watkins was withdrawn at half-time after clattering into a goalpost and may miss out when the national team play their next opponents in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
