The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound examination about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
