United Nations Removes Sanctions on Syrian President Ahead of White House Visit

The UN Security Council gave the green light to a United States-backed measure removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his White House visit the coming week.

Sharaa was named provisional head of state following his leadership in an insurgent campaign that removed the previous leader in winter 2024, concluding thirteen long years of civil war.

The US representative UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that recognised Syria was in "a fresh chapter" following Assad's ouster.

He had been subject to UN sanctions while commanding the Muslim faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was formerly linked to al-Qaeda. Washington eliminated the group from its registry of foreign terror groups in July.

More Penalties Removed

Additionally, the United Nations lifted sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

Syria's foreign minister applauded the lifting of these restrictions, stating online: "Syrian officials convey thanks to the United States and supportive states for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."

Upcoming White House Meeting

President Sharaa's presidential meeting on Monday comes after President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president demonstrated "substantial headway" working toward stability to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Subsequent to their talks, the US president stated Sharaa had "a legitimate chance to unify the country".

The pair met initially in May, when Trump visited Riyadh while traveling through the Middle East.

Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed Sharaa as a "tough guy" with a "very strong past".

His Islamist group HTS was al-Qaeda's affiliate inside the country until he severed ties during 2016.

Prior United States Journey

Monday's visit does not represent his initial visit to the United States during this period. During September, he made history as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the UN General Assembly in Manhattan in almost 60 years.

Throughout his presentation, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position among the nations of the world" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
